C3

Baroque violinist composers are focused upon in this concert. Both from Italy, Corelli and Vivaldi were the violin maestros of their day, defining the highest standards in instrumental technique and performance, whilst also innovating when it came to composing their own music. Corelli’s Concerto Grosso No. 4 in D major is one of the most notable of the set of twelve in his Opus 6, published in 1714. It has a joyfully charged sound, and demonstrates well Corelli's renowned singing, cantabile style. Because it has four movements (a Concerto Grosso usually has more), it is often regarded as an early influence on what would later become the standard form of the symphony. Vivaldi, the ‘red-haired priest’, was also fond of grouping his works in a set of one dozen. The L'estro armonico (The Harmonic Inspiration) is a set of twelve concertos, published in 1711. The Concerto for 4 Violins in B minor gives many members of the RBSO string section an opportunity to shine on this occasion.
