C4

The cream of the RBSO’s string sections come together to present this beautiful programme of varied string quartet music. Beginning with an arrangement of the Thai traditional tune Kamen Sai York, these players have developed their own identifiable ensemble sound. The quartet will then interpret two cornerstones of this most refined of musical forms. Beethoven wrote the six quartets of his Opus 18 between 1798 and 1800. The first and the fourth have remained the most popular, and here the RBSO String Quartet will perform the latter, No. 4 in C minor, which has an opening so strident and earnest that the listener is left in no doubt as to the identity of the composer. Dvořák wrote one of his best loved works, the ‘American’ string quartet, during his highly successful period as Director of the National Conservatory in New York City. Whilst vacationing in the nearby tranquil small town of Spillville, Iowa, he happily penned a true masterpiece, both melodious and straightforward.
