Strauss enjoyed great success with his comic opera The Gypsy Baron, which was second in popularity only to Die Fledermaus. Rumbustious in nature and with much Hungarian influence, there is an especially beautiful oboe solo in this entertaining overture. Far more earnest in tone is Beethoven’s substantial Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor. As was often the case with ‘The Creator’, the first performance in 1803 with Beethoven himself as soloist was commented upon with bewildered admiration. His friend Ignaz von Seyfried hurriedly turned the pages of the largely incomplete piano score, because the composer hadn’t had time to set it down on paper. With scribbled indications to guide the genius, he played mostly from memory. A later German musical giant, Schumann, published his Symphony No. 2 in C major in 1847, at a time when he had departed from composing at the piano, instead working everything out carefully in his head. With a famous scurrying scherzo which gives the violins a chance to truly shine, this wonderful symphony is dedicated to the King of Sweden and Norway.
