B4

The Classical period style is explored in this cheerful concert of three works by two giants of the era. Haydn composed no fewer than fifteen operas whilst in the employ of Prince Esterházy. At the time some 150 opera performances per year were organised by Haydn himself in the palace’s private theatre. The World on the Moon is a charming, humorous opera buffa, first performed in 1777 for the wedding celebrations of Count Nikolaus Esterházy (the younger son of Haydn's patron) and the Countess Maria Anna Wissenwolf. Haydn’s Piano Concerto No. 11 was written just a few years later, and has a simple gallant style whilst incorporating some discernible Mozartian influences. His original cadenzas have survived, performed this evening by eminent Thai pianist Sasipa Rasmidatta. Beethoven was also largely indebted to Mozart when creating his own debut symphony, but frequent use of sforzandi as well as sudden shifts in tonality reveal the ambitious young man already seeking to chart his own course at the dawn of the eighteenth century.
