Giuseppe Verdi: Overture: La Forza del Destino
Max Bruch: Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64
RBSO presents these three pieces from the late Romantic period. Giuseppe Verdi’s, the leading opera composer of the 19th century, Overture- La Forza del Destino is a lengthy collection of melodies from the opera, stressing a three-note “fate” motive. Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 is one of his most well-known, with a beautiful melody that showcases almost the entire range of the violin. The concerto consists of three continuous movements, featuring a subdued opening with a powerful emotional theme in the first movement, a dominant role for the solo violin in the dreamlike second movement, and an energetic Finale showcasing a virile Gypsy-style theme. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, like Symphony No. 4, is a cyclical symphony with a recurring main theme. Unlike the Fourth, the theme is heard in all four movements. The theme is gloomy in the first movement but gradually transforms into a triumphant march, which dominates the final movement. Overall, the fifth symphony follows a familiar Romantic symphony blueprint. It comprises the traditional collection of four movements.
Niek Baar, a Rotterdam-born violinist, has captivated audiences globally in prestigious venues such as Philharmonie Berlin and Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Baar recently returned as a soloist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic and projects with orchestras like Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken. Sander Teepen, a returning RBSO conductor, has earned recognition in conductor competitions, securing prizes in Budapest, Bucharest, and Vienna. He has conducted at prominent orchestras worldwide, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra, Banatul Philharmonic Orchestra Timișoara, Divadlo Antonina Opera House - Dvoraka Ostrava, Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra Košice and the Moldova Philharmonic Orchestra in Iasi.
